Dear New Hampshire Calendar Contest Participants, We’re excited for your participation in our 18th annual Calendar Art Contest, a program created to encourage third grade students and teachers to learn more about recycling. Since its inception, the program has grown to include our entire operating footprint (Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York) and received over 1,800 entries last year! The purpose of the program is to encourage students to Recycle Better™ while learning ways to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible. Teachers and students are encouraged to discuss ways to reduce the amount of material taken to landfills by recycling or reuse and the impacts to the environment for future generations. After the discussion, students should create their own drawing to illustrate what waste reduction, reuse and recycling means to them. Due to COVID-19, we understand that in-person lessons may be difficult:  If your school is holding in-person classes, we encourage you to work on this together as a class and have each student create their artwork.  If your school has shifted to remote learning, we still encourage working on this together as a class, virtually. Ask students to create their artwork and mail it to you so that you can send it to us for submission by the March 7, 2022 deadline.  If students are not in the classroom at the time of the presentation, we will mail the Congratulatory Letter, Gift Card, and framed drawing to their home. Once we have received all the entries, we will select thirteen winners, one for the cover and one for each month. Depending on the number of submissions additional honorable mentions could be added to the back of the calendar. Cannon Mountain Ski & Ride Program Updates Twin Mountain & Whitefield Recreation Programs Cannon has offered for us to switch our ski day next week due to PSU being there Wednesday with 2,000 kids. That is a very crazy day so we have agreed to change our day next week. We will be going on Tuesday February 8th instead. We hope this is enough notice to make any changes necessary. The kids had a great day today and we finally lucked out with good weather. Our make up days will be February 16th and then March 9th. March 9th there will be no cannon instructors so if there are any parents that are available to come skiing on the 9th we could use the help with the beginner groups. Dear Parents and Families, We are pleased to announce that Whitefield Elementary School will be taking advantage of a recent opportunity to promote student health and wellness to our middle school students. A grant through the NH Department of Education has allowed the White Mountains Regional School District access to a trilogy of films and associated social emotional curriculum to open conversations around social media addiction, technology, cyber-bullying and teen anxiety. These films, which are accessible to all individuals throughout the district, will be used in our middle school 6th, 7th and 8th grade guidance and small group lessons. The films, titled, Like, Upstanders and Angst offer viewers “hope, resilience and strategies to create positive change” in an attempt to destigmatize mental illness by discussing topics such as anxiety, depression, isolation, and suicide. We encourage you as parents, guardians and community members to take some time to watch these videos and have conversations with your child/ren around some of the things they are experiencing in their own lives. Dear Parents and Families, For the past several years, staff and students at Whitefield Elementary School have discussed and practiced hazard drills related to school safety. You may be aware of the laws that require schools to provide a minimum amount of exposure and training to different types of drills- RSA 189:64 and NFPA 101. Whitefield Elementary School consistently meets these minimum requirements and strives to go above and beyond to provide safety, education and readiness to our school community in the event an emergency occurs. Several years ago SAU 36 adopted the ALICE model of addressing hazardous responses and our SRO, Officer Lemoine, has been trained to address these sensitive topics with the students and staff of WES. Over the next few weeks, Officer Lemoine will be leading age-appropriate safety discussions and activities with students and staff. These will review all of our emergency response procedures but at no time will the safety or well-being of the school community be compromised. You have my assurance that there will be no “surprises.” In the late spring our school community will be participating in a full campus evacuation drill that will also involve our local first responders. We will provide more details as the date of the drill approaches. If you have any questions, please reach out. MS Athletics Update: The sports bus is departing WES tomorrow at 2:45 with all of the basketball teams and wrestlers. They are doing a drop and pick up at WMRHS. Then processed if on your LES to drop off Team 2 before going to Groveton.

On Friday, 1/28, the WMRHS traveled to Cannon to race GS from the top of the Taft Training Slope. The team competed against Lin-Wood, Littleton, Profile, Moultonborough, Derryfield Academy, Woodsville, Berlin and Gorham and there were 126 racers! The 2 run GS was spread out through the day and the course was reset for the 2nd run. Savannah Stone (Run 1 - 49.19s, Run 2 - 53.28s) took top team honors with her 16th place finish. Katryna Dube (54.08s, 58.29s) and Jocelyn Wyman (54.52s, 58.16s) stepped up and laid down amazing runs for 24th and 25th place, only 0.31s separating the two. Yonah Friedman (1:01.29s, 1:06.62s) finished with a smile in 32nd place. Abigayle McCusker's first run was good for 18th place, but she did not finish her second run. The Girls took 4th place for the day! The boys team took 6th place for the day. Will Stone (46.44s,52.77s) took 13th, followed by Alex Harden (49.25s, 51.7s) in 16th place. Their runs were great to watch, Will besting Alex in run 1, with Alex taking the lead in run 2. Nick Russo (1:09.09, 1:10.03) in 53rd and Eli Carrier (1:09.14, 1:10.90) in 54th were only 0.05s apart after the first run! The boys team are pushing each other to get faster! You may design the ad and send me a .jpg, or you can explain what you would like for the ad.
